I want them back. Doubtfully I am the only one.

If there's a problem with songs, make players write them in game. Provide them with a list of song themes and justify their texts penalizing them for bad (but still corresponding to the theme) or rewarding for good ones with the song levels. So each bard will have his own songs (or you can allow them to use the songs written by others with certain penalties).
