Rangers and Swords?

I never understood why rangers would have built in staff specialization, and get to choose sword or whip as their additional specialization; however, they start life with:

staff                    1% recall                 100%

Why sword 60% and not staff?  Could this be changed to staff to properly reflect the initial weapon specialization for Ranger?  Most other classes (as I recall) properly have their initial specialized weapon somewhat trained at birth.

Sword and shield is what i would use on first ranks if i would play ranger.
Especially good is shield from bakali, giving 5 damrolla. Much better than staff.

I agree, but since Rangers begin life with staff, it seemed logical that they would start with staff training.  This may be more pronounced given that using sword specialization is a choice one may not prefer, over whips for example.

funny, but it is hard to remember ranger who killed me with staff...i can remember many rangers killing me with an axe, with whips , even with swords... so maybe they are not so close to staff... guy from lotr that becames king in the end, is using swords all the time, and he is ranger

Very good point.  Perhaps my view is because of how I play then.  If more defensive, I like staff.  If more offensive, then swords are probably better.  But Rangers can do much more with staff than sword, even if killing isnt one of them.

Simply thing.. at the start you dont need staff skill as much as you need swords one. Anyway even your stand off skill which make staffs usable will come much more later. So for more faster growing up you're gettin swords focused at the start. And there still is up to every character to practice any another skill if he/she wish

Why that shield is made that it can be left in backpack?  So, obviously, it is made with purpose, to be for ranks 1-10
In theory, it is possible, if you are in group of you, level 1, fighter level 8 and mishkler level 15...
Anyway, imms are not concerned with small cheaters very much now, because they keep themselves  busy by exterminating big cheaters, which you could experience urself...

I agree with Val, rangers should have their fav weapon at 60, not sword... same for any fighterlike... I remember a mud where they asked at the creation about the weapon of choice... although it did not include hand to hand... But then again, hth is gained on higher level...
