There is a slight lag between sleeps. I don't know why he didn't react, both minds were clearly there.

Empower spell enhances sleep to a lesser extent than spell penetration , so both were a factor (both mastered). Against good saves sleep almost never works.

deda, to my knowledge, Empower Spell affects ALL spells, whereas Spell Penetration is stronger but affects only offensive spells. That is the difference.

And in my opinion, Spell Penetration would have been a better pick for necromancer, considering the degree to which his maladictions turn the odds in his favor.
And if you stack Spell Penetrations with items that increase spell power (rings of wizardry, Staff of Magius (?)), the number of good outcomes in battle might increase considerably.
