I could gate before and leave my sleeping pet. He would not follow.

Gated around today, and found sleeping pet, STILL asleep but following.

Sleeping donkey is still following when I gate and he still sleeps.

Well. I believe that pet is simply gated with You - no matter if he is awake or asleep (after all, magic does not take care if he was asleep, it's not that smart). If You really want to leave the pet - just order him sleep, move one room away and gate...
