This rule which prohibits Magistrates to use their special guards to defend their clan seems quite odd to me. Here I am trying to give my reasons why.

I agree that the players should follow the rules of the game, whatever they are. However, if we are talking about an RP game, there is an IC component. In my opinion, rules which you have to follow not because of your role and character but just because they are OOC “game rules” destroy the illusion and the fantasy and the ultimate satisfaction from the game. The more frequent it gets, the more frequently you are reminded that it is just a “game”. It would be nice, therefore, to have rules of the game based on internal game logic as much as possible.

Not calling for the special guards in clan defence is quite out of the game logic. IC it would be like fighting the blood enemies of everything you stand for in life with one of your hands in your pocket. Why not to through everything you can into the battle?
Ahhh… at that moment you are forced to realized that it’s just a keyboard and a screen you are looking into, not a face of a blood enemy and that some weird “game rules” prohibit you to type “call guards” due to the game balance or whatever.

What I’m saying is that game rules (which are a necessity, no doubt about that) should ideally be strongly backed up by in_game logic. Following this line, by the way, if a player breaks a rule but manage to roleplay his ass out facing an immortal or something could sometimes be spared and it does happen since, ultimately, your role and your in_game character if you stay IC is more important and more fun to others than OOC game riles.

Yours truly, LD

A disclaimer: do not fry my heels, I am not a magistrate and not wannabe

As for me, I never heard that I can't use special guards when defending. Tell where this rule is written or how should I know it otherwise? My immortal or clan leader should say it then, my guardian should not to hear it from warder, don't you think?

Special guards are called to help you in punishing criminals, not for saving your (some draconian mage's) poor ass. It's your own headache. And I wonder why immortals didn't tell you it before. Perhaps they will.

And.. according to ur replies you could call guards anytime you go PK - just 'why not if I can'. Senseless.

Look at this point, Trum:

if you raid Hall of Justice, I can't care about the Law, since I will be powerless, so i must prevent you from such chaotic act.

I repeat again: neither you nor  anyone else except my clan leaders can tell me how to use special guardians, since there is no rule in help files about this. If they will say that I can't - I won't - it's simple.

And my guardian doesn't go "PK" as you dared to say - he just cares about the law.

Thats just needs to be hardcoded. Something like safety from all attacks of special guards unless you are a criminal.

In some muds they are not assisting mobs, they are only autoattacking criminals

Post by: Solinari on June 01, 2004, 06:57:37 pm
Yes, I agree it's somewhat odd that Guardians can't call their guard's help to defend their keep, but it would completely ruin balance. Guardians need extra strong clanpowers to fight criminals, not to freely use on opposing clans. Imagine that... Guardians could even kill reraiding characters who are out of their range!

Special guards are meant only for fighting criminals. I don't know if it's in the help files, but I knew it when I had a guardian long ago, and every guardian should know it. Kiri's hardcoding idea sounds like a good way to enforce this.

And aside from all that, why would a Draconian want to help the poor weak people in the cities?

Agree with this point absolutely! THIS is a core problem to the balance here, special guardians attacking out_of_the_range PC who is raiding the Hall of Justice.

However, one could come up with a more logical solution to this than that currently implemented. One possible solution whould be that anybody attacking the sentinel automatically gets an internal "Terrorist" flag or something, on which special guards would react and engage/assist only if the "terrorist" is in their range and IS currently raiding, not standing on the eastern road. (edited: after a succesfull raid on the Hall, the flag sould be reset I guess). This solution is simple enough, should not alter the balance and within the game concept to me, in contrast to the current quite unnatural "do not use your powers" rule.

On the other hand, immortals have too much to do and no time, so you Magistrates should obey whatever they say is right as allways ;D

As to me, guardians should be used to protect clan+punish criminals+reraid. They shouldn't attack non criminals within PK range. They are just soldiers of the Keep, why should one soldier (player) reraid or protect his clan, while others soldiers stay somewhere in the corner smoking plant? Sounds funny... I don't really know, if they should be allowed to asssist in raids, but why not - decrease the rank, or inclrease the lag - suxx them anyway, but they should protect their comrades I guess ;P

I think it's not right. Special guards must be used only for hunting criminals. What for they must defend keep on raid? It's too much for clanpower to give such powerfull creatures considered as usual charmies.  >:(

How about you come to a nice balance?  A decent agreement?

What about if special guards were made so that when they are fighting a normal character who isn't a criminal, they do the same damage of a gate guard, or something, or a standard charmy.  But whenever they are fighting someone who is flagged a criminal, they get extra benefits in combat.  Greatly increased HP, greatly increased hit/damroll, etc, bumping them back up to the way they have always been.

So the guardians can use them to defend their keep, but the special guards aren't that powerful when defending a non-criminal.  But they remain just as powerful as they are now when they're fighting a criminal.

Doesn't that seem fair?

There would need to be measures put in place so that if someone who is not flagged a criminal is helping the criminal out by fighting the special guards and weakening them, the guards don't die very easily.  Maybe make it so that if there is a criminal that the special guards are fighting or going after, anyone else who tries to attack them won't be able to hit them?  Like "The gods protect a special guard from you."

Just a thought.

I remember I've got criminal flag just because our group attacked a Guardian out of the city. :) We were from hostile clans, of course... but it was rather strange for me...

Special guards are not supposed to be used freely, imho.

But ok, fair enough, reraid with them, sit with them, thats cool.

I'll just be a little more free with releasing:-

Guardcrusher, CrimeLord of Palanthas (rank 60).

look guardcrusher

This man is powerful, deadly, with a cruel streak and a vicious temper. He hates special guards with a passion, and would gladly see every one of them dead.

And I will pay him to hunt them down. :P

Heehee, cool...
btw Musty (I'm at school now, so can't log on to check for sure)
 - As I recall, if you attack a special guard when they're against a criminal, you get criminaled too, so don't need to worry about protecting special guards from someone...you attack/disable special guard, special guard gets to attack you as a criminal soon

I'm completely in two minds about this.

On the one hand, Special Guards under the rules are for use in hunting criminals.

However, I do not see why they should not be called to protect the keep from being raided - not however reraided. This way, it is harder to raid Guardians so the Law is more readily available for those who need it.

It should NOT be used in PK, and it should NOT be used to defend the Sentinel, just the Royal Guardian of the Law.

Just in my opinion, of course. This is not the voice of the Gods ;)

Yep, it make sence. I think it is the best proposal on the topic so far.

As far a I remember the Laws. Raiding guardinas is considered a crime. So special guards will assist againts raiding anyway. (By raiding attack on the Royal Guardian is ment, not on the sentinel). For all other cases - if you feel poor about defending your outer guard - do not go defend. But calling special guards to compensate lack of guts is imho wrong.

Raiding guardinas is considered a crime.

not raiding, killing

so guardian should reraid first, then criminal those who raided him :)
