Fly and player mounts

You concentrate a moment and pray to your deity.
A war elephant doesn't need your help to fly.

I notice it is always like this, even when I have never cast fly before on the mount (this was a new elephant), and even when I myself am not flying.

If it isn't a bug, does this also mean that player mounts are automatically immune to e.g. trip?
